The Thankful Cookies came to me because with the holidays coming up, we will all be enjoying some really good food. Every year, we look forward to eating turkey, ham, stuffing, sweet potato pie and the list goes on and on. And of course, because we gathering with family or being the meeting place for family, our dogs and cats are family too. They deserve some Thanksgiving goodies too. Obviously, we can't give them table food, but we can give them something. Introducing the Thankful Cookie Collection. We have some really good ingredients, some you are familiar with like pumpkin and some you aren't, maple syrup.
Pumpkin is the first ingredient that we'll talk about and you guys are no stranger to pumpkin. It is a staple in two of our treats and is beloved by me and Suki. Pumpkin is a great aid for digestive health. It is considered a superfood for dogs because in addition to acting as a digestive aid, it also contains "essential micronutrients and fiber". It also "helps to remove excess water from a dog's digestive tract".
Sweet potato is a food that is rich in beta carotene and fiber that helps lower the risk of heart disease and certain cancer in dogs. The fiber in sweet potato also "helps the digestive system function more effectively". Sweet potatoes are low in fat, but contain a lot of important vitamins such as Vitamin A, B6, C, and many others. Vitamin A is good for maintaining healthy eyes, muscles, nerves, and skin while Vitamin C is crucial for a functioning immune system. However, if your dog has weight issues, feed with caution and consult with your veterinarian about adding sweet potato to your dog's diet due to its high glycemic index.
Maple syrup has excellent sources of manganese and zinc which help your dog's immune system. When giving your dog maple syrup, please avoid the ones that contain xylitol. It is extremely toxic to dogs. Also, feed in moderation because maple syrup is high in sugar.
